Surfing the web at Happy Feet Pedorthics http://www.happyfeetpedorthics.com.au/our-shoes-your-feet/arthritis about arthritis awareness events for 2015 many related events were found. So whether you are a client or referrer of Happy Feet Pedorthics there are many opportunities for all of us to learn more and seek support with respect to the “arthritis group of conditions.” Musculoskeletal conditions affect our muscles; bones and joints. There are over 150 conditions that come under this umbrella term, including osteoarthritis, gout, lupus, osteoporosis and fibromyalgia. People coming to Happy Feet Pedorthics with one of the arthritis conditions are in one of the 5 main groups requiring appropriate footwear attending our clinics.

For me this begs the question – what is the incidence in the population of the arthritis group of conditions in Australia? Again back to the web! From the October 2010 – a snapshot of arthritis in Australia 2010, National Centre for Monitoring Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Conditions, Australian Institute of Health and Welfare Canberra report some visual information.

Looking at trends ‐ what is happening in the female group compared with the males? What have we learnt and what are we doing to learn from the older people in our community who suffer from what can be a very debilitating condition.

Early in my professional life in the beginning days of Happy Feet Pedorthics I had a very poignant lesson from a client who had extremely painful arthritis. In my ignorance I thought the client was so rude! Clearly I was so limited in my experience at the time. The person had earphones in her ears listening to music and her hands in her handbag with a heat pack. Why? But to detract from the pain of the arthritis. I have never made such hasty and very poor judgements since!

Clearly then arthritis has considerable impact on the person who suffers and on the wider community.

  • Attending to your activities of daily life is affected
  • Workplace participation is affected
  • Participation in volunteerism is affected
  • There are direct and indirect financial costs to manage

Stepping back to Happy Feet Pedorthics shoes with the correct length, width depth, appropriate for the activity and “done
up well” with the laces, velcro and / or buckle will assist people suffering from arthritis to have happy feet.
